A day of firsts for Westie

We had a great day yesterday with Westie. His first time in this little rocker that we purchased when Laura was a baby.

Loving being back in Utah

Today Mark and I finally got to see Westie. What a treat to see him bounce around in his chair.

20131021-223729.jpg
Grampy got him to go to sleep.

20131021-223811.jpg
A true joy to hold him in my arms.

20131021-223912.jpg
He liked the hats we brought him from the Russian border.

Hanoi, and Halong Bay

Mark and I arrived in Hanoi yesterday.

20131015-211329.jpg
Our tour guide told us Ho Chi Minh was like our NYC, while Hanoi was more like DC. We liked Ho Chi Minh much better.
We drove 3 hours to get on our cruise junk for a 3 day trip around Halong Bay.

20131015-212026.jpg
We had heard a typhoon was hitting the middle of Vietnam, but the weather was very calm, so we figured we were okay.

20131015-212352.jpg
We were just getting ready to go see some caves, when we were told we would have to return to the shore as they were concerned the weather would get worse. Lots of sad faces.
Mark and I were told we would be put up in a ” nice” hotel, which concerned us as have seen some nice hotels and did not know what to expect in Vietnam. We were pleasantly surprised.

20131015-212858.jpg
We were lucky to be able to see a show while eating dinner.

20131015-213044.jpg
Dinner was also good.

20131015-213213.jpg
We will go back in the morning to see if we can finish our tour. Just part of traveling and my luck.

Having fun in Bangkok

Mark and I arrived in Bangkok and we are enjoying the nice warm weather here. We went to the weekend market and I enjoyed some coconut ice cream.

20131007-175638.jpg
Traditional toppings of sticky rice and peanuts.

20131007-175807.jpg
For dinner we went to our favorite restaurant to eat the delicious Thai chicken wings. The asparagus soup was also tasty.

20131007-180047.jpg
This morning I tried the green Pandan pancakes. Pandan is a plant that grows in tropical areas in Asia. They have a sweet unique flavor and are used to enhance the flavor of desserts and savory food.

20131007-180407.jpg
I am getting lots of exercise climbing the steps for all the overpasses. Fun to watch all the motorcycles make their way to the front and then take off.

20131007-180648.jpg
I love to see all the colorful taxis, green, yellow, pink, blue, red.

Another mountain to climb

Yesterday Mark and I climbed another mountain behind our apartment.

20130929-105131.jpg
Look what we found, a horse skull.

20130929-105211.jpg
A Buddhist memorial.

20130929-105302.jpg
The air quality was not great. Hopefully it will be better today.

First bike ride in Mongolia

Today was a beautiful sunny day, so Mark and I decided to ride into town for lunch.

20130907-180351.jpg
What a workout as the roads are so bumpy, with no shoulders so cars are always honking.

20130907-180455.jpg
Also lots of road construction, so a few places we rode on the bumpy sidewalks.

20130907-180617.jpg
I miss the wonderful biking in Beijing.
Tomorrow maybe snow, so we enjoyed the wonderful warm weather.

Lake Hovsgol – Northern Mongolia

After 3 days in the hot sand we flew north to Muron and were able to see the Deer stones that are over 3,000 years old.

20130826-173415.jpg
No one knows for sure why they are there.

20130826-173557.jpg
A group from Russia and Mongolia were digging at the site. They did not find any burial sites but did unearth a horse head.

20130826-173721.jpg
We then drove up to Lake Hovsgol which is also referred to as “the Blue Pearl of Mongolia.”

20130826-174004.jpg
It contains 70% of all the fresh water in Mongolia.

20130826-174136.jpg

20130826-174159.jpg
When we arrived we were greeted by this ox that carried us and our luggage to our ger.

20130826-174440.jpg

20130826-174528.jpg
This nice young man came to our ger every morning and evening to start a fire to keep us warm.

20130826-174835.jpg
The Eco friendly toilets were interesting.

20130826-174937.jpg

20130826-175009.jpg
We learned to milk cows.

20130826-175043.jpg
We enjoyed hiking in the hills.

20130826-175702.jpg
We walked out to the wishing rock to make a wish.

20130826-195332.jpg

20130826-195528.jpg

20130826-195606.jpg
We had a wonderful time horseback riding, as we climbed up and down the hill.

20130826-200000.jpg

20130826-200450.jpg
The water was beautiful

20130826-200554.jpg
But very cold, so I just got my feet wet.

20130826-200702.jpg
The highlight of the trip was meeting a reindeer family while going for a boat ride. They live in tepees and are nomadic.

20130826-200942.jpg
This male reindeer is 9 years old. Both males and females have antlers.

20130826-201056.jpg

20130826-201133.jpg
These handsome men were great guides.

20130826-201255.jpg
We purchased a few things from the reindeer family. Earrings made from the antlers, along with the knife holder, and an ornament.

20130826-201653.jpg
A storm passed by after we got our bond fire started. Pretty fascinating.

20130826-201815.jpg

20130826-201841.jpg
I did climb to the top of this mountain behind our ger.

20130826-202247.jpg
It was a great trip, but nice to be home and sleep on my soft bed, and enjoy hot water and indoor plumbing.

Gobi Desert in southern Mongolia

Last week Mark and I went to visit the Gobi Desert with 6 ladies from Thailand.

20130825-120349.jpg
It was fun to ride on a small plane.

20130825-120434.jpg
We stayed in a nice ger camp.

20130825-120607.jpg

20130825-120646.jpg
First time I have seen a double bed in a ger.

20130825-120724.jpg
We hiked up a hill to view the petroglyphs which are dated back to 3,000 BC.

20130825-120838.jpg

20130825-120916.jpg

20130825-120944.jpg
We enjoyed climbing in the sand dunes.

20130825-121035.jpg

20130825-121103.jpg
Mark and I did not climb to the top.

20130825-121155.jpg
Look at this friendly camel that I got to ride.

20130825-121255.jpg
I enjoyed the ride.

20130825-121336.jpg

20130825-121359.jpg
We were able to visit a Mongolian family. Mark enjoyed playing with the family goat.

20130825-121511.jpg
We saw some cute kids selling rocks and bracelets.

20130825-121702.jpg
This baby loved the chocolate.

20130825-121757.jpg
We got to see lots of goats and sheep.

20130825-121946.jpg
The flaming cliffs reminded me of southern Utah.

20130825-122035.jpg

20130825-122105.jpg
The sunsets were beautiful.

20130825-122150.jpg

20130825-122213.jpg
Eating out in the desert was an experience.

20130825-122301.jpg
This ger camp was beautiful.

20130825-122347.jpg
This gal sprinkled us with milk for a safe journey.

20130825-122439.jpg
She also put some on the tires for a safe trip.

20130825-122523.jpg
I love this pic that Mark took.

20130825-122733.jpg

Going for a walk

Yesterday morning Mark and I went out for a walk up the mountain behind where we live.
Look what we saw.

20130811-090051.jpg
We have recently had some rain so the grass is pretty green.

20130811-090140.jpg
He didn’t seem to mind me taking some pics.

A few days in Tokyo

Mark and I spent a few days in Tokyo on our way back to Mongolia.
A view from our hotel room

20130806-084358.jpg
A beautiful night view

20130806-084435.jpg
We stayed in a different part of town from last time

20130806-084536.jpg
The food was great once again

20130806-084619.jpg
Mark enjoyed his Japanese noodles at Denny’s

20130806-084707.jpg

20130806-084740.jpg
We had to do a little shopping. My name was engraved into these knives.

20130806-084841.jpg
Mark enjoyed picking them out.

20130806-085024.jpg
We also bought a fan from this gentleman who made them from straw and painted on them.

20130806-085149.jpg
We visited a temple so a mark learned how to wash his hands before entering.

20130806-085309.jpg
He also cleansed himself with the incense.

20130806-085447.jpg
I enjoyed some mango ice cream.

20130806-085534.jpg
We both enjoyed our $5.00 peach.

20130806-085638.jpg
We returned to Mongolia last night to 60*F and rain. What a change. Not sure if I am ready for cold weather yet.
