Touring around Beijing!

We spent a few hot humid days touring around Beijing. Quite a hike up and down the stairs at the Drum Tower.

Xian and the Terra Cotta Warriors

Our trip to Xian started out on an exciting note. We boarded the plane and then sat for an hour, so our interesting breakfast was served. As soon as we opened the lunch boxes the plane started to move, as if we were taking off, so everyone scrambled to gather up their food. One man put his rice soup in the back pocket of the seat in front of him, only to watch it drip out the bottom. Then the plane sat for another hour!!!!

We had an educational trip to learn about the Terra Cotta Warriors. The emperor was buried in the mountain behind.

P1040125

He had the warriors built to protect him in his afterlife.

P1040126

P1040129

It is amazing to think that each of the warriors is put together piece by piece like a puzzle, since they were all crushed under the weight of the earth.

P1080887

We enjoyed a nice dinner with Simon and his family.

P1040142

Simon’s niece and nephew thought Patricia was beautiful and wanted a picture just with her.

P1040145

After our Chinese meal we thought Simon should try a Blizzard ice-cream at DQ. He liked it.

IMG_1443It was great to see Wendy and Duan Duan again.

P1040148

We had a chance to ride on the wall around Xian which is around 10 miles long. Some of us got a real workout.

Here is Pattie explaining how we should work as a team.

P1080998

I listened and peddled very quickly to keep up with her!!!!!

We were ready for a rest when we finished.

IMG_1486

We arrived at the airport an hour early with Simon as he also had to fly to Beijing, to find out that our plane was delayed at-least 4 hours. I was so happy he was along, as very little English was spoken, so we were in a constant state of confusion. In the end we sat there for 7 hours and got home at 3:30 am.   Another new learning experience concerning flying.

Great Wall in the Rain

Seeing the Great Wall in the rain was a new experience. Luckily raincoats were available for only $1.50, so we were thrilled.

Many people braved the rain.

Disappointment at the end as they closed the slide because of the rain, so we took the chairlift down. Oh well!!

Tom and Trish got their pictures taken at the bottom of the hill.

We made it to Bangkok

We made it to Bangkok last night, and got to bed at 2:30 am. Now up at 7:00 to tour the Royal Palace. I think we will see some tired faces later.

20120716-072358.jpg
Oh! What a happy day.

The stars are with us today

We started our day with a delicious breakfast.

20120714-094127.jpg
We got to the airport with no problems, and received our tickets to Beijing. When we land there we will hopefully secure our tickets to Bangkok. One step at a time.
Since we arrived at the airport 3 hours early, and had some time to wait around for our flight,
Mark and I figured we would try our luck at getting everyone into the business class lounge.
We learned we could each take one person with the additional person costing $50.00. After all that has happened we decided to pay the fee without telling them so they could have yet another new experience. When they arrived and we told them they could join us, the excitement filled the room, so much so that the two employees at the desk decided to waive the fee. They told Mark it was an early Christmas gift :)
They really smiled when Pattie took their picture.

20120714-100632.jpg

We hope our luck holds up to get us to Bangkok.
